My solar export to grid sometimes

Even when the **CT clamp is installed correctly** and the inverter is configured for **Zero Export / No Export**, a very small amount of power can occasionally flow back to the grid. This is normal for most hybrid and grid-connected inverters.

### Why a Small Amount of Export Can Occur

The inverter continuously uses the CT clamp to measure whether the property is importing or exporting power. It then adjusts its output to keep the power at the grid connection as close to **zero** as possible.

However, this control cannot react instantaneously. Loads in a home or business can change within milliseconds. For example, an air conditioner, pump, refrigerator, heater or other appliance may suddenly switch off. For a very short moment, the inverter may still be producing the power that the appliance was consuming.

That excess energy has only one place to go — temporarily back into the grid.

The CT detects the export, the inverter reduces its output, and the system returns to approximately zero export.

### Zero Export Does Not Mean Absolute 0 Watts

In practice, **Zero Export is a control function, not a physical barrier preventing electricity from flowing toward the grid**. Small fluctuations around zero are therefore expected.

This can be caused by:

* Rapid changes in household or commercial loads
* CT measurement accuracy and sampling speed
* Communication and processing delay
* The inverter's power-adjustment response time
* Normal measurement tolerances

For this reason, many inverters allow a small **import/bias power** setting. Instead of targeting exactly 0 W, the inverter can intentionally maintain, for example, a small 20–100 W import from the grid. This provides a buffer that reduces the chance of momentary export.

So if you see **small, short export spikes**, it does not necessarily mean that the CT installation or Zero Export configuration is incorrect. **Continuous or substantial export**, however, should be investigated because that can indicate CT direction/location, phase measurement, meter configuration, wiring, or inverter-setting problems.
